The Division of Economics within the School of Economics and Management comprises some 15 economists with experience in research and teaching in many countries.

We teach well over 1000 students at the first year level, many of whom are majoring in other disciplines, through to well-established Honours and Masters programmes by coursework and dissertation. We have a growing number of PhD students, many of whom are studying at distance but spend some time with the division each year. We have many international students in postgraduate programmes.

All our staff are actively engaged in research (see individual staff pages) and have particular strengths in macroeconomics, international trade, economic development and environmental economics. We have building experience in the area of health economics and the school hosts the Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division (HEARD).

Some particular specialisations of staff include the economics of transition economies, the economics of ports and harbours and the economics of conflict and security.
