The Centre for Electron Microscopy on the Pietermaritzburg campus was established in 1968 as a research support facility. Equipped with an array of modern microscopy equipment and qualified staff, it is acknowledged as one of the leading EM laboratories in the country.

In addition to providing facilities for the research community both inside and outside the University, the Centre provides courses in both basic and advanced electron microscopy for staff and postgraduate students from this and other universities.

A particular area of specialisation is the development of cryo (freezing) techniques for the examination of specimens in both transmission and scanning electron microscopy.

The installation, in late 1999, of a Philips XL30 ESEM has further expanded our ability to handle a wide variety of material for SEM examination. The unique feature of this instrument, that of being able to view uncoated, hydrated material has been heavily utilised by our research and commercial clientele.

The Centre for Electron Microscopy is committed to interaction with the community. We have a well-established commercial clientele, many research collaborations with local research bodies and a programme which brings upwards of 600 local high school children to the Centre each year.

The Molecular Biology Unit, which provides a service in Molecular Biology Techniques on the Pietermaritzburg campus, is administered by the Centre for Electron Microscopy.
